e will provide an overview of various pathologic conditions associated wit
h oral ulcerations. Case-based examples will be used to help participants
recognize features of the patient history as well as clinical signs and sy
mptoms to make an accurate diagnosis. Current concepts in disease pathogen
esis and treatment options will be reinforced through an interactive forma
t.Understand the features of traumatic ulcers and clinical settings that c
ontribute to their developmentRecognize the signs and symptoms of herpesvi
rus infections\, from HSV to VZV\, and potential treatment optionsReview i
mmunologic ulcerative conditions from canker sores to erosive lichen planu
s to mucous membrane pemphigoid and understand treatment strategiesLooking
for Leukoplakia This course will examine and discuss the conventional exa
mination of the dental patient\, with an emphasis on the clinical features
of precancerous and cancerous lesions. Case-based examples will be used
to emphasize high-risk settings and physical characteristics that can help
distinguish worrisome lesions from other conditions. We will review curr
ent data regarding the role of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in ora
l cancer as well as tonsillar cancer. The role of adjuncts in the detecti
on of early oral cancer and precancerous lesions will also be discussed.To
review a standard approach to clinical evaluation of the dental patient\,
including both visual and tactile evaluation of the face\, neck and oral
cavityTo review current concepts of oral cancer and precancerous lesions\,
including epidemiologic evidence for risk factors in oral cancer as well

ly-available devices as adjuncts in the detection of oral cancer Speaker I
nformation: Dr. John Kalmer John Kalmar is a professor of Oral and Maxil
lofacial Pathology at The Ohio State University. Dr. Kalmar received his d
ental degree at Southern Illinois University\, specialty training at Emory
University and later earned a PhD in Experimental Pathology at Emory. Fo
r seven years\, he served in the Department of Pathology at the University
of Rochester\, Rochester\, NY. In 1999\, he started his journey at Ohio
State and currently serves as Program Director in oral pathology. Dr. Kal
mar is a Past-President of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial
Pathology and Past-President of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofaci
al Pathology. He teaches both pre- and post-doctoral students and enjoys p
roviding continuing education to a variety of professional audiences. This
